End of Year Math Review Ideas for Secondary Math Teachers

End of year review doesn’t have to feel like chaos.

I know how overwhelming it can be to prep students for final exams while juggling everything else that comes with wrapping up the school year. You’re trying to keep students engaged, help them brush up on key skills, and maybe, just maybe, find time to start cleaning up your classroom. Sound familiar?

Whether you teach middle school or high school math, the pressure to review everything can feel intense, on top of everything else that is going on. But here’s the good news: your end of year math review doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective!

One of my favorite tools for final exam or state testing prep? Printable task cards.

Why Task Cards Work So Well for End of Year Math Review

Task cards are a total game changer when it comes to math review, especially in those last few weeks of school when attention spans start to fade. They’re versatile, easy to prep, and can be used in so many different ways depending on your students’ needs and classroom dynamic.

If you’ve been thinking, “I need a way to review that doesn’t involve reteaching every single lesson,” task cards might just be your new best friend!

Here are some of my favorite ways to use them:

  • Traditional Task Card Practice

Sometimes you need a quiet, focused day. I’ll hand students a set of cards and a recording sheet, and let them work through the problems at their own pace. It’s a great way to review topics like solving multi-step equations or simplifying radicals without overwhelming students with a long worksheet or packet.

  • Small Group Review

For a more collaborative feel , I’ll set up small groups with different sets of task cards. Students work together to solve the problems and compare answers. It’s especially effective for trickier topics like systems of equations or solving multi-step inequalities. Plus, it gives me a chance to walk around and check in with groups that might need a little extra support. I utilizing task cards in small groups with my Pre-Algebra students.

  • Station Review

I love using stations when I want students to move around the room. I’ll set up different topic-based stations, each with a short set of task cards. Students rotate every 10-15 minutes. This works so well for classes like 8th Grade Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, where I want to hit multiple skills in one day.

  • Scavenger Hunt

Want to make review feel more like a game? Try “hiding” the task cards around the room and let students “hunt” for the problems! I’ve done this so many times with all of my classes when I taught both middle and high school. It’s a hit every time! Especially with my Algebra 1 classes! My favorite part is that it gets students up and moving while still engaging with important review content.

  • Exit Tickets or Bell Ringer Warm-Ups

Even if you don’t have time for a full review day, you can still sneak in some meaningful practice by using task cards as warm-ups or exit tickets. I love pulling 1-2 cards from my Algebra 2 review task card set when I know we need a quick refresh on a prior topics.
